Streethawk
Lyrics on Destroyer’s Streethawk: A Seduction record that suggest a theme like don’t give up your dreams or keep doing what you believe in or don’t submit to the structure.  You got the spirit. Don’t lose the feeling. Girl, what could have been till you gave up the violin for a slight but distasteful penchant for men. I know it must be hard to stay away from a life of...

Jake had remarked recently that Adrian was “just another tired East Village faggot.” A pretty one, Randy had to admit, but a cliche nonetheless. He had always thought that Adrian —- with his closely cropped blond hair, his perfectly toned gym body, and his waxed, hairless chest — resembled every other gay man he saw, dressed as he invariably was in strategically ripped...

His father was a monster. You don’t beat your son. You alienate him, distance him from any sense of self-worth, force him toward the womanish and then berate him for latent faggotry, but you do not beat him. That’s for people just off the boat.  Sam Lipsyte - The Ask

“I’d become one of those mistakes you sometimes find in an office, a not unpleasant but mostly unproductive presence bobbing along on the energy tides of others, a walking reminder of somebody’s error in judgement.” Sam Lipsyte - The Ask

“Did you know Don was an interrogator in Iraq? Just for a little while.” “I took a couple of classes. Online. But my instructor called me Don Juan because in all the simulations I used my masculine wiles instead of, like, a waterboard. When the situation allowed for it. Arab men are attracted to me. They have a whole different take on buttly rapaciousness over there.” Sam...

…some moments still brought us back to our child’s infant months, both of us on tiptoes, pertified we’d wake the baby, lose those seventeen minutes of email catch-up we believed our sacrifice had earned us. We were like the Frank family in their Dutch attic, but with email.  Sam Lipstye - The Ask

Then one morning around 2 a.m., he called, intoxicated, from his office to announce that he had “developed feelings” for someone new. The woman he became involved with was an unemployed alcoholic with all the physical qualities of a porn star — bleached blond hair, heavy makeup, provocative clothing and large breasts. After the revelation, my husband tried to break off his...

Magic Molly Blog Entry from 1961
The water to the building was cut off. Some problem with the pipes. I went up to the roof, collected snow in a pan, then put it on the stove and lighted the burner to heat the snow and make water for coffee. The snow melted, turning into gray water and black bits of filth. I was surprised. Beautiful white snow falling on the rooftops is mainly filth.  Leonard Michaels, Diaries, Feb. 9, 1961

The Loss of a Tooth
Verily I am the creature of circumstances. Here I have swallowed an indispensable tooth, and so am no whole man, but a lame and halting piece of manhood. I am conscious of no gap in my soul, but it would seem that, now the entrance to the oracle has been enlarged, the more rare and commonplace the responses that issue from it. I have felt cheap, and hardly dared hold up my head among men ever...
