“After the forest dies so will mankind” - the words from this 1970 poster were used long before much thought was given to the decay of the earth. The forest is part of the German national identity, and also a valuable commodity that must be preserved. It was recognized early on that the forest is a crucial part of nature - first by 19th-century poets and philosophers, later by conservationists.
